چکیده

We postulate that dominant damage modes in a fiber-reinforced laminated composite are fiber breakage, matrix cracking, fiber/ matrix debonding, and delamination/sliding. The first three damage modes are represented by internal variables with their development governed by constitutive relations. The delamination/sliding failure mode is presumed to initiate at a point on an interface between two adjoining layers when the transverse shear and the transverse normal stresses there are on a failure surface defined in the stress space. Equations expressing the balance of mass, the balance of linear momentum, the balance of moment of momentum, material response, and those giving the development of damage are simultaneously solved numerically under prescribed initial and boundary conditions to find an approximate solution of a transient 3-dimensional initial-boundary-value (IBV) problem. Values of material parameters for the AS4/PEEK composite are determined from experimental data available in the literature. The developed mathematical model has been validated by comparing computed results, for several IBV problems different from the ones used to find values of material parameters, with the corresponding experimental results available in the literature. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The Effect of Evolving Damage on the Finite Strain Response of Inelastic and Viscoelastic Composites

A finite strain micromechanical model is generalized in order to incorporate the effect of evolving damage in the metallic and polymeric phases of unidirectional composites. As a result, it is possible to predict the response of composites with ductile and brittle phases undergoing large coupled inelastic-damage and viscoelastic-damage deformations, respectively. For inelastic composites, both ...

Elastic modulus measurement of polymer matrix nano-composites reinforced by platelet nano-clays

Polymer-clay nano-composite materials, in which nano-meter thick layers of clay dispersed in polymer matrix, have generally higher mechanical properties than normal polymeric materials. A new three-dimensional unit cell model has been developed for modeling three constituent phases including inclusion, interphase and matrix. The total elastic modulus of nano-composite is evaluated.  Numerical r...

Finite Element Analysis of Low Velocity Impact on Carbon Fibers/Carbon Nanotubes Reinforced Polymer Composites

An effort is made to gain insight on the effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the impact response of carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRs) under low velocity impact. Certain amount of CNTs could lead improvements in mechanical properties of composites. In the present investigation, ABAQUS/Explicit finite element code (FEM) is employed to investigate various damages modes of nano composites ...

‌Progressive Damage Analysis of Laminated Composites using Continuum Damage Mechanics

In this paper, progressive damage and global failure of composite laminates under quasi-static, monotonic loading are investigated using 3D continuum damage mechanics. For this purpose, a finite element program has been developed using an eight-node 2D layered element including layer-wise plate theory. Damage analysis of a single orthotropic layer under various uniform in-plane and transverse l...

Damage Tolerance and Nde of Polymeric Composites

As composites are being used as primary load bearing members, the increased understanding of damage tolerance of the material is becoming important. When load is applied to a structure containing a crack or damage, a small area ahead of the crack undergoes very high stress. These stresses cause further damage in this small zone. Initially this damage is at the microlevel: in isotropic materials...
